Here is a fantastic gem of a Victorian home located in a beautiful town on Long Island's North Shore!
A perfect place to raise their three young children, this professional couple love to entertain many people at a time on holidays and summer weekends. They wanted a large open space that was warm and inviting, where family and friends can immediately feel at ease whether at a dinner party or barbecue. Many original details in the house were kept, others were added to look original, and a large extension was incorporated into the structure to accommodate their family.
While we decided to keep the decor of all the built-ins very traditional, the furnishings are modern and contemporary, which adds an interesting and unexpected juxtaposition to the home, and also reflects the lively, fun personalities of the homeowners.
The Main Foyer of the home (above) is the first thing guests will see upon entering, and has to set the tone for the home. The original staircase allows for a nice vignette to take place in this nook. A casual seating area was chosen to welcome guests, with the bonus of being able to bring these chairs to wherever they are needed throughout the home during one of the many parties to be thrown here. Soft green chenille fabric on the comfortable chairs and chocolate brown grass cloth wallpaper to add very nice elements of color and texture to this area that will get a lot of use most days.
...and here's the room where the family and friends will hang out the most! The sunken Great Room was added for the purpose to play, watch TV, spend time with people and be able to have a fun time. The vaulted cathedral ceiling and tons of windows add lots of bright light and it was important to keep the feeling of open space when furnishing this room. A dramatic chandelier and gauzy linen window treatment welcome guests into the space with a generous, plush rug that fills the room with warmth.
Comfortable furnishings upholstered in easy-to-clean fabrics and leathers were chosen to maximize seating when eatching movies or the game on a big-screen TV. Kids can sit on one of the many ottomans, which double as storage units for extra pillows and throws. This is a great big room for lots of family and friends to enjoy all year long, and will be the setting for lots of good times and memories!
In warmer months, the outdoors of this home will be just as important as its indoors. A very large Dining Deck was constructed to serve as a base for entertaining many people at barbecues and dinners on summer nights. A table for 12 was chosen with lightweight cushioned seats surrounding it. Sheer curtains were added on the perimeter to add some light diffusion as well as to keep out any bugs. Elongated topiaries accentuate the vertical space and allow the deck to be a transitional "outdoor room" between the backyard and main house.
This wonderful home will serve this family very well over the years and provide a functional, beautiful place for them to enjoy many many fun times with the people they love!
